Undergraduate Internships
Undergraduate students studying at the University of South Alabama Stokes School of Marine and Environmental Sciences are guided by a world-renown faculty with expertise ranging from fisheries sciences to marine ecology and ocean physics. Outside of classroom experiences, students have access to a variety of internship opportunities where they can gain hands-on experience prior to graduation.
Internship Opportunities
The UCI Community Geoscience Initiative (CGI, formerly CJI) based in the Dept. of Earth System Science (ESS), in partnership with the UCI Research Justice Shop, is recruiting recent college graduates for paid one-year postbaccalaureate (postbac) fellowships for our 2026-2027 cohort. The CGI Fellowship will run from September 1, 2026 - August 31, 2027. Note that CGI postbacs will be hired as full-time UCI employees (Junior Specialists) in the ESS department with an annual salary of $55,000 for a one-year appointment that includes generous benefits. Applications will open on UCI Recruit on March 1st and will close on April 24th, 2025 Fellows must be authorized to work in the US.
CGI Postbac Fellows will:
- Learn new technical skills and gain hands-on research experience with UCI faculty who are working on cutting-edge earth and environmental science research.
- Work closely with local community-based organizations to conduct team-based research projects that address environmental issues of interest to the community.
- Participate in seminars, workshops, and classes on social science, geoscience, and community-based research methods.
- Receive guidance from a diverse network of mentors.
- Participate in professional development activities designed to help achieve career goals, whether that be entering the workforce or pursuing graduate studies.

The Fish and Wildlife Research Institute’s (FWRI) Sea Turtle Nesting Program is seeking up to four detail-oriented interns for each term to assist with field work, lab work, and data processing components of various research projects on sea turtle nesting ecology.
Projects may include research related to nesting, hatching, and emergence success, phenology, and sex ratio related to climate change. The research will support population and nesting trend analyses and conservation status assessments.
These positions are located in Melbourne, on the central-east coast of Florida. The summer and fall terms will be largely field-based but will also have a considerable laboratory component and some data processing.
This is a program for students at all levels to receive a stipend/tuition/etc. and have a guaranteed Federal position at a DoD lab, like ERDC, after graduation.
The program is open to anyone with a real interest in sharks and a healthy passion for marine life. No previous diving, research or conservation experience is necessary and training in those fields will be provided. We will teach you how to explore, understand and protect our beautiful oceans.
