Fisheries Biologist
Education: MS Degree in Marine Sciences or related field of study plus 3 years of relevant experience
Location: On-site at SEFSC in Pascagoula, MS
Required Experience
A minimum of 3 years' related experience leading to:
- Knowledge of applying basic concepts, principles and methodologies of fish or related biological field sufficient to independently perform scientific tasks using standard methods and techniques.
- Able to identify benthic fauna in the U.S. Gulf of America in depths between 5 and 500 meters (approximately 800 species).
- Experience with running the Scientific Computing System (SCS) Version 4.7.0.2430 software. Must be able to start SCS Acquisition module; navigate to CTD, bongo, neuston and trawl event loggers; and populate empty data fields.
- Experience with running Fishery Scientific Computing System (FSCS) Version 1.6 software. Must be able to initialize and populate Station Initialize,Total Catch Weight, Species and Weights, and Fish Sampling modules of FSCS. Must also be able to troubleshoot, identify and solve problems resulting from improper implementation.
- Knowledge of Southeast Area Monitoring and Assessment Program field sampling protocols for trawling and plankton, in order to lead scientific watches.
- Proficient in the use of fish, invertebrate, and protected species identification
books and dichotomous keys; computer literate and experience with common word processing,
database, statistical, and graphics programs.
Capable of writing reports at the college level and making oral presentations. - Sea going Contractors who participate on research cruises on NOAA ships will be required to annually submit a NOAA Health Services Questionnaire (NOAA Form 57-10-01) to the Office of Marine and Aviation Operations to determine fitness for sea duty. Sea going Contractors will be required to have a current tetanus vaccine (once every 10 years) and an annual tuberculin skin test.
- Must be a US Citizen or a Permanent Resident and be able to pass a background investigation to obtain a security badge to enter the applicable government facility.
- Must possess valid driver’s license, issued in the USA.
Desired - Knowledge of otolith processing, stomach content analysis and tagging techniques.
- Knowledge of procedures required upon encountering endangered or threatened species.

Friends of Pando, is working and dedicated to educating the public, supporting research and preservation efforts, and inspiring stewardship of the Pando Tree, the largest tree in the world. An official partner to Fishlake National Forest, our organization undertakes work to protect, monitor and restore this unique tree to ensure it can be enjoyed by generations to come. Our organization is seeking a candidate for a part-time, flexible role helping us improve management and protection of Pando through remote sensing projects. The candidate will work with the team to develop strategies and protocols to leverage LiDar data sets to better understand and monitor the tree’s health over time. While this is a part/flexible opportunity, this project also carries potential for publication credits on remote sensing on a natural subject known the world over.
Responsibilities
1. Assist Friends of Pando and our partners in evaluating data sources EX: point clouds
and shape files
2. Assist team with development of plot strategies working with Arc Gis or similar
tools
3. Work with team to marry plots maps and data sources
4. Work with the team to evaluate and test methods to improve data pipeline
5. Work with he team to document methods
6. Work with team to replicate results
Requirements
1. Must be experienced Arc Gis Pro user
2. Must have work experience using LiDar data sources (RGB, ordered and unordered)
3. Must have laptop and availability to work as a member of a remote project team
4. Must be available for part time and flexible between late May of 2025 and late
December of 2025. (This role is part time flexible)
5. Background in any one of the following domains preferred; botany, silviculture,
GiS, ecology, data visualization
