Naming Buildings Not Recognized by a Donor
1. Purpose
The naming of new and existing buildings (outside of University of South Alabama Gift Acceptance and Naming Recognition Guidelines (the “Guidelines”)) will be coordinated by the Office of Engineering Design and Construction (“ED&C”). This policy is to ensure consistency in naming conventions utilized for University buildings not named pursuant to the Guidelines.
2. Applicability
This policy applies to all University divisions, including USA Health.
3. Definitions
N/A
4. Policy Guidelines
The naming of all University buildings will be coordinated by ED&C unless the building is named in accordance with a process set forth in the Guidelines. Naming or renaming recommendations may be submitted to ED&C by the primary tenant of the building (e.g., the dean(s) of the college(s) housed with academic buildings, the department head(s) housed within administrative buildings, or the chief executive officer or director(s) housed within USA Health buildings). The Chief Facilities Management Officer, after receiving naming or renaming recommendations for such buildings, will determine the name of the building.
5. Procedures
After funding for new construction or renovations is approved, or if a special request is received by ED&C, ED&C will compile building naming options for review by the primary tenant of the building. The primary tenant shall rank the options presented, including any primary tenant-suggested naming options, and present the same to ED&C within ten (10) days of its receipt of the naming options from ED&C. Once received by ED&C, or if the primary tenant fails to respond to ED&C’s request within the stated time, the Chief Facilities Management Officer will render a final decision on the name of the building.
6. Enforcement
This policy is enforced by USA Finance and Administration. Non-compliance may result in suspension of construction or other projects related to the building being named. University faculty and staff failing to follow this policy may be subject to disciplinary action, up to and including separation from employment.
